Description
Gorillaz returns with The Mountain, their ninth studio album, which will be released through their own label, KONG. Produced by Gorillaz alongside James Ford, Samuel Egglenton, and Remi Kabaka Jr., with contributions from Bizarrap, the album expands the band’s sonic horizons through global collaborations and multilingual storytelling.
The Mountain was recorded in various locations around the world, from Studio 13 and Devon in London, to Mumbai, New Delhi, Rajasthan and Varanasi in India, as well as Ashgabat, Damascus, Los Angeles, Miami and New York, and features performances in five languages: English, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish and Yoruba.
Like most Gorillaz albums, The Mountain is packed with incredible collaborators who shape the album. Across its 15 tracks, you’ll hear collaborations from Idles, Kara Jackson, Yasiin Bey, Johnny Marr, Black Thought, Anoushka Shankar, and Omar Souleyman. There are also posthumous collaborations from legends like Bobby Womack, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, Dennis Hopper, Mark E. Smith, Proof, and Tony Allen.
Visually, Jamie Hewlett’s artwork captures the band’s four animated members as nomadic figures in India, reflecting the stylistic shift where Albarn’s love for other cultures and outside genres is more evident than ever in the Gorillaz sound.
